Seed polymorphism in Acacia nilotica and their effect on growth of seedlings in nursery condition

Variation in size and weight of seeds of Acacia nilotica and their effect on the growth of seedlings were evaluated in 35 plus trees across five provenances at Bilaspur and Surguja districts of Chattisgarh. Seed size and its weight varied across theprovenances. Seed size was greater in all the provenances in Bilaspur district compared to that in Surguja district Seed weight was correlated to seed length, seed width, and seed thickness. Variation in size and weight of seeds did not affect the growthof the seedlings. Shoot biomass, root biomass, root nodule numbers and root nodule biomass of the seedlings were correlated to leaf area index. There was correlation between root biomass and shoot biomass and between shoot biomass and root nodule biomass. Root nodule biomass was correlated also to root biomass.
