On-farm and off-farm greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) were compared under 2 contrasting pastoral based milk production systems. The previously developed Pastoral Milk Emission Model was used. GHG analysed were CH4, N2O and CO2. The main aim of the study was to identify the impact of simple management changes on emissions and farm profitability, to allow the development of simple mitigation strategies. A further aim was to determine the effects of the production system on uncertainties surrounding the emission of GHG. The 2 production systems analysed were: the standard procedures recommended for Kilmaley (County Clare) and Moorepark (County Cork), both in the Republic of Ireland, with grazing seasons of 149 and 250 days, respectively. Management scenarios tested included changes in pasture quality, pasture utilization, N application rates, silage quality, level of concentrate supplementation and calving date. GHG emissions were greater at Kilmaley than at Moorepark. Simple changes in farming systems led to small alterations in both on-farm and total GHG emissions at both locations, whereas the impact of silage quality was site-specific. Tailor-made whole farm mitigation strategies, developed by combining all identified management changes, both reduced GHG emissions and increased farm profitability. Projection of the resulting data onto the entire dairy herd of the Irish Republic suggested that significant reductions in emissions would be possible.
