With many thousands of tires stockpiled in anticipation, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has high hopes that its new contractor, Newfoundland Envirotire Shreds Inc., will have a tire recycling program set to roll by the end of September. The program has had a rough beginning. Since April 1, the province has banned tires from landfills, and retailers have been remitting a recycling levy of 3 dollars on tires up to 17 inches in rim size, and 9 dollars on larger tires. But Municipal Recyclers, the company originally contracted to carry out the recycling program, pulled out at the last minute, leaving retailers and municipalities scrambling for temporary storage sites.
