摘要

Widespread interest in gap junctions was evident at the 2002 American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) meeting in San Francisco as shown by the substantial attendance at over 30 presentations during a Gap Junction Special Interest Subgroup meeting, a Cell-Cell Junctions Mini-symposium, and two sessions of gap junction posters. The cell-to-cell channels present in vertebrate gap junctions allow diffusion of small molecules (<1000 MW) between adjacent cells and are composed of members of the connexin (Cx) family of gap junction proteins. This intercellular communication plays an important role in the control of cell proliferation, embryonic development, cell differentiation, and the coordination of differentiated cellular functions. Deficient or improper gap junction function has been associated with a variety of disease states, including some forms of neuropathy, hereditary deafness, cataracts, skin disease, heart disease, and cancer. Ablation of the genes in mice and zebra fish has revealed an even wider array of defects in both development and adult tissue function. These are summarized in Table 1.
