Ukstins Peate and Bryan (2009) emphasized that the interpretations of He et al. (2003a, 2003b; He et al., 2006) requiring substantial plume-induced domal uplift prior to Emeishan Large Igneous Province (LIP) volcanism were based on incorrect lithological identifications, insufficient structural information, and incomplete understanding of carbonate sedimentology, volcanic processes and volcanic environments. Nevertheless, He et al. (2010) continue to suggest that the sub-volcanic stratigraphy at Emeishan provides compelling evidence for doming. We contend that this is based on poorly documented paleokarst features postulated to have developed immediately prior to flood volcanism and disregards recently published and well-constrained biostratigraphic data from the underlying Maokou Formation (Wignall et al., 2009a, 2009b; Sun et al., 2010).
