Ecological science has long had problems with theory progress, partly because there is no clear account of how ecological systems evolve. Moreover, such a deterministic account may never be possible, given the evolutionary foundations of ecology, itscomplexity and uniqueness, the absence of natural kinds in biology, and no universal species concepts to fix properties determining species membership. Given this situation, how is theory progress in ecology possible? This short article suggests one way.
