摘要

The multiple functions of the tumor suppressor p53 and their regulation are under intense scrutiny since nearly thirty years. Meanwhile p53 biology has reached a remarkable and ever increasing level of complexity (e.g., see Chumakov 2007). The relatively new discovery that "p53" comprises a family of different isoforms produced by alternative splicing surely did not make things easier. So far, nine splice variants of the prototypic human p53 (p53a) have been identified. Eight of them are identical in their central part, but differ from p53a and amongst themselves in their N- and C-termini.
