The Research Council of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SNV) has funded research to determine the ecological consequences of discharges of wastewater from the forest industry. The background to this decision was the suspected environmental effect of, in particular, the chlorinated organic matter in the discharges from bleaching plants, and the lack of methods to assess the biologica/ecological consequences of the discharges. Following the establishment of the research programme, the activities were conducted in several sub-projects and were co-ordinated by a project steering group.
