Although this boom is continuing today, the gold-mining industry is something that most of us see only from afar. For safety and security reasons, gold mines do not welcome the public as a rule. Rules sometimes have exceptions, though, and one exception worth noting can be found at the Cresson Project in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Each year during June, July and August, the Cresson Project, one of the largest gold mines in the United States, offers tours that bring gold mining up close and personal in a way that visitors don't soon forget. Over the years, I've taken quite a few mine tours, both private and public. The Cresson Project tour, which my wife and I took in August 2007, ranks among the best. I am not aware of any tour that provides a better look at the operations of a large, modern, open-pit gold mine. The two-and-a-half-hour-long tour is conducted in a comfortable company vehicle, the guides are well versed in matters of gold, geology and mining, and visitors are taken literally into the middle of a major mining operation.
