Keith G. Laver, one of Canada's most celebrated rose hybridizers, was born in Cooksville, Ontario (now Mississauga) in 1917, and grew up on the family fruit farm. It was there that he had his first introduction to roses, which his mother, a teacher, grew at home. In 1936 he enrolled at the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph (now the University of Guelph) where he majored in horticulture and biology. More importantly, he met June Rutherford, who was taking the Hornemaker's Course for Girls at Macdonald College. They both graduated in 1940, and the dynamic duo of Keith and June Laver officially began when they married in March 1942.
