Barcelona and Guadalajara/Spain, Effective September 2002, BASF Coatings will become a System partner ("Leader Supplier") to the Barcelona plant of Nissan Motoriberica S.A., the automotive manufacturer that is part of the Renault/Nissan Alliance. The agree-ment covers ail three Nissan coating lines at the Barcelona plant, where passenger car models Terrano, Aimera Tino, two models of the new Trafic Vivaro delivery van, and plastic bumpers are manufactured. A total of 137,000 vehicle units corne off the assembly line every year. BASF Coatings is responsible for coating with primer Systems that provide stone chip protection in colors that rrtatch the topcoat. BASF will also supply 24 different colors of basecoat and the clearcoat, which provides gloss and additional resistance. Under this System partnership, which will initially run for a three-year per-iod, cooperation between the two companies goes far beyond BASF delivering paints from its site in Guadalajara to the Nissan assembly plant in Barcelona. BASF's responsi-bility for the coating process is remu-nerated on a "cost-per-unit" basis. That is, the automotive manufacturer does not pay for the quantity of paint delivered, but rather for the perfectly painted body. With an on-site service team, BASF Coatings ensures efficient, high quality coating around the dock. Apart from quality assurance, the BASF team also handles mate-rials management and logistics in the paint shop.
