Demand for oils and fats within the personal care sector diverges widely between countries and continents. Mark Rowe in London, Julian Ryall in Tokyo and Rachel Jones in Caracas report on the consumer preferences which are driving innovation in cosmetic and personal care products around the globe. Personal care products - soaps, cosmetics, lotions and hair products - have always been important consumers of vegetable and animal-based oils and fats. Yet, this is a complex sub-sector of the global oilsand fats industry. Demand is highly sensitive to consumer needs, and these vary widely from country to country, culture to culture, and region to region. Furthermore, these are times of flux and innovation within the personal care sector, and so oils and fats manufacturers who keep a weather eye on trends, will be able to seize the day commercially.
