Distribution of Benthic Foraminifers in the Zone of the Primorskoe Current of the Northwestern Part of the Sae of Japan

The taxonomic composition of the present-day benthic foraminifers in the surface deposits of the northwestern shelf of the Sea of Japan, from the estuary of the Chernaya River to Cape Saion was studied. A total of 102 species of benthic foraminifers representing 48 genera were identified. The patterns of benthic foraminiferal distribution were analyzed depending on such abiotic factors as depth, the hydrodynamical regime of the near-bottom waters of the cold Primorskoe Current, the temperature of water bodies, the influene of the riverine runoff, and the structure of the bottom sediments. The zones with high bioproductivity were recognized and the species diversity was assessed. Complexes of benthic foraminifers corresponding to certain depths, bottom temperatures, and deposit structure were recognized with respect to the ratio between the dominant, subdominant, and accessory species. In the zone of divergence, at sea depths of 100-250 m, a great number of empty benthic foraminifer shells were found. They were probably delivered by a deep vertical current at the shelf edge from deeper habitats.
