In this issue, Kahana and Elner express dissatisfaction with the suggestion of Grove and Weber that the term "orbital pseudotumor" as proposed by Birch-Hirshfield in 1905 should be abandoned. They present a detailed, scholarly, and well-conceived argument for retaining the term "orbital pseudotumor" because there seems to be no superior alternative terminology for this well-known condition. Like Grove and Weber, we agree that the term orbital pseudotumor is not ideal. Pseudotumor is a negative term and describes what the medical condition simulates, that is a "tumor" but it does not describe what the condition is, that is an "inflammation." Said another way, according to the Oxford American Writers Thesaurus, "pseudo" means "fake," "sham," "bogus," and "tumor" means "lump," "cancer," "growth." So together, pseudotumor means fake lump, sham cancer, or bogus growth. This is not helpful for the clinician. The clinician would prefer a term that explains what the condition is, not what it is not.
