Holistic nursing is defined as any nursing practice that focuses on healing an individual as a whole. Creating a healing environment in the perioperative setting by attending to color, lighting, and sounds, and demonstrating caring behaviors are examples of holistic nursing interventions. Prayer, active listening, music, Healing Touch, reflexology, humor, and nutrition counseling are also examples of interventions. Conventional nursing practice has historically included a variety of modalities that many now consider alternative or complementary therapies. This series will focus on three selected evidence-based nursing interventions that can be incorporated into the perioperative setting. The first is presence.
