The Disease Section of the American Academy of Optometry announced the winners of the 2006 Ocular Photography Contest, sponsored by Fujitsu. Their photographs were displayed in the Education Pavilion at Academy 2006 Denver, as well as in Fujitsu's booth in the Exhibit Hall. The Grand Prize winner was submitted by Academy Fellow Dr. Peter Swann from Australia. The patient was an 18-year-old Fijian woman of East Indian extraction. She presented for a routine eye examination. She had fundus albipunctatus, which is a rare, bilateral condition, inherited as an autosomal recessive, and one of a group of diseases termed stationary night blindness. Typically, vision and visual fields are normal as are the retinal blood vessels and the optic nerve head, as was the case with this patient. The white spots in the fundus spare the macular region. The disease was not present in her parents or siblings. The patient had no symptoms suggesting night vision difficulties although dark adaptation testing revealed a reduction in sensitivity of about half a log unit.
