Weeks of rain not only saturated Western Bay of Plenty soils in July and August, but in some areas it made it impossible for kiwifruit growers to maintain best practice and Psa protocols. Nervous growers now wait to see if the added stress on previously healthy vines will result in Psa. On some orchards where there had never been any significant flooding before, both vines and avocado trees stood in water for up to two to three weeks, with flood pumps failing to keep ahead of repeated downpours. Vine pruning was delayed and growers anxious to apply protective copper sprays immediately afterwards were unable to get tractors in to do the job.
