Much has changed in the seasonal fruitpicking labour market since Bron Davies began working as the PickNZ seasonal labour co-ordinator in , Hawke's Bay in November 2004. For the first time in recent years, a labour shortage has not been declared in Hawke's Bay as the picking season approaches. More backpackers are looking for seasonal work in horticulture because of less work available in other industries, and the continuation of the RSE (Regional Seasonal Employment) scheme whereby Pacific Islanders come to work for six months of the year have led to more workers available than in previous years.
