In the middle of November last year my wife and I were enjoying a walk in the bush. It was a beautiful day, and the rewarewa were in full flower, but the bush was silent. We know that bird life has been seriously reduced by introduced predators such as mustelids, rats, possums and feral cats, but in previous years when the rewarewa were in flower we'd noticed the loud and continuous hum of bees working the flowers up in the canopy. The silence was obviously due to the killing out of feral bees and maybe untreated hives by varroa mite.
