Achieving early harvest is an incentive for growers but this is generally at the expense of fruit quality attributes such as appearance (e.g.blush intensity) and taste (e.g. sugar accumulation or flavour development). In an attempt to enhance the accumulation of these attributes, production tools are being sought. One such tool being used by some growers is the use of reflective mulch between rows of trees. Reflective mulch reflects light back up to the canopy with the aim of enhancing growth and development of the fruit (Figure 1). In the past three seasons, members of the Quality Systems Team at HortResearch have been investigating postharvest quality and handling systems for their recently released crisp peach varieties 'Scarlet O'Hara', 'Southern Ice' and 'Coconut Ice.' However, from season to season the fruit quality at harvest has varied considerably. In some seasons the external appearance was pale yellow, while in others the fruit were highly coloured with red blush. Similarly, the eating quality varied from season to season determined by the level of soluble solids content (ie sweetness) of the fruit. This was low in some seasons at around 10% brix while in others was very high, averaging greater than 15% brix.
