Laird's Large is a new selection of tamarillo selected for size, colour and taste that is making an impact on the New Zealand domestic market with consistently high returns. This story starts back in 1982 when Allan and Jill Laird bought a property atWaiotahi just the Whakatane side of Opotiki, and made their first planting of tamarillos. Plants were purchased from a local Opotiki nurseryman and were of two types; a large roundish one that could well have been Oratia and a more tear drop shaped onesimilar in shape to Red Beau which of course had not been selected and named at that time. These trees did well and Allan selected three or four of the best trees as a seed source for his next planting. In this second planting he noticed one tree that appeared outstanding in many aspects and he observed this for six years before taking seed for propagating his next planting.This tree had large fruit, with an above average yield, and good eating quality. He also noticed particularly good vigour, always being about the first to come away strongly with new growth after spring pruning, with less likelihood of getting powdery mildew or showing virus symptoms.The degree of resistance or tolerance to these diseases would need careful scientific checking, butit is probable that the good vigour helped to minimise symptom expr sion. It was also noted that it had a substantialfruit stalk that maintained its condition better than the general run of tamarillos. However, as the trees aged the substance of the stalk did not appear as substantial as on fruit from the first two or three crops.
