With skilled orchard labour hard to find, the promoters of a new telescopic device to train young kiwifruit runners, say their system appears to have hit the market at the right time. Les Pearson, an experienced Te Puke contractor with a gang of 15 and John McLaughlin who just likes a challenge, are partners in GROWSMART Ltd which has developed the pole system (patent pending) using stress-tested galvanised steel. They say the poles won't bend or break, don't need replacing like the commonly used wooden splints and are very user-friendly. Best of all it's a simple system which cuts labour costs.
