New Zealand's horticulture exports are growing rapidly, but so are trade barriers. A major report estimates that the total cost of tariffs on New Zealand exports increased by 13% in the year ended June 2008, compared with the cost assessed in 2006.Exports were 2.005 billion dollar for a wide range of products while tariffs cost 197 million dollar. As stated in our December issue (p 6) this works out on average as a cost of 31,000 dollar per grower, up by 3,000 dollar. Included in these products were New Zealand's most valuable horticulture export, kiwifruit and apples. Excluded were the booming wine industry, nursery plants, arable seeds and flowers. Exports for these are valued at an additional 820 million dollar.
