The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is in the final stages of publishing a major revision of its ATEX standard IEC 60079-1. This document gives the specific construction and testing requirements for electrical equipment intended for use in an explosive atmosphere (ATEX) environment, which is protected by a flameproof enclosure of type “d”. A proposed seventh edition is currently circulating in final draft format and is scheduled for full publication in October 2012.1 A number of significant changes and additions have been made to this standard.
