On May 18-22, SAMPE '08, the major conference/exhibition for advanced materials - largely focused on composites, resins, fibers and adhesives - enjoyed a very successful return to the west coast (Long Beach, CA) after being successfully held last year in Baltimore, MD. The event attracted 4,750 attendees from 49 states and 39 countries; and 282 exhibiting companies, including 80 new exhibitors. The conference was organized by the SAMPE Japan and Utah chapters. Conference General Co-chair, Daniel O. Adams University of Utah, stated: "We delivered an industrial program that is diverse and timely." In addition to tutorials on topics ranging from an introduction to composite materials and adhesive bonding, to thermoplastic composites and nanocompos-ites technology, the program included sessions on aircraft, space, industrial, and infrastructure applications; test methods; structural health monitoring; liquid molding processes; sandwich cores; durability, impact and damage; natural materials; advances in NDE; pressure vessels; and nano-technology. Panel discussions included the SAMPE Fellows Panel at which the five new SAMPE Fellows discussed their work that had led to their selection for the prestigious award; Air Force R&D in materials and manufacturing technologies; nanotechnology as it prepares for commercial markets; and educational needs for the advanced composites industry. Japanese R&D activities plus market trends/opportunities related to composites was organized as a full panel as well. That panel discussed small wind turbine blade technology, high performance pitch based carbon fiber, advanced composite space satellite structures, new spread technology for carbon fiber tow materials, and, forecasts of future composites industry growth.
