We walked single file along the thin moun- tain trail. Twenty packhorses carried our gear. In a valleyfar below, plants and trees thrivedbeside a roaring river. But along ourdusty trail, 4,000 meters (13,123 feet)above sea level, little grew. Weglimpsed a herd of wild sheepon a faraway cliff and birds cir-cling overhead, but saw nothingelse alive. The thin air made ithard to breathe.
