Originally developed to track dolphins and tuna from fishing boats, Boeing's ScanEagle unmanned aircraft has accumulated more than 100,000 combat flight hours in Iraq and Afghanistan for the U.S. and Australian armed forces. The U.S. Navy currently launches the 10-foot-wingspan ScanEagles from ships, making the aircraft the informal incumbent in the upcoming Small Tactical UAS/Tier II (STUAS) competition, which will supply UAVs to the Navy and Marine Corps for years to come. However, Boeing's ScanEagle team is expected to face stiff competition from rivals, including Raytheon and Swift Engineering, which are expected to offer a version of Swift's Killer Bee blended-wing-body UAV; AAI Corp., with its double-tailed Aerosonde Mk 4; and a partnership of General Dynamics and Elbit of Haifa, Israel, with Elbit's single-tailed Skylark 2 UAV. On top of that, the Navy, which is managing the acquisition, has changed its approach since hiring Boeing to fly UAVs off its ships. The Navy wants to buy the aircraft outright this time and hire the contractor to service them and train military personnel to operate them. The Navy has raised the stakes since its first STUAS industry day in August 2007.
