A total of 2985 arachnids (spiders, harvestmen and false scorpions), representing 76 species, was collected in pitfall traps located in four stages (pre-thicket, mid-rotation, mature and over-mature) of the development of pinewoods in Glen Affric. The number of woodland spider species increased from the pre-thicket to the mid-rotation and mature stages, but declined in the more open over-mature stage. Arachnid diversity declined initially, but then increased to the mature and over-mature stages. Theimportance of old plantations located near remnants of semi-natural pinewoods is confirmed by the occurrence, apparently for the first time in a plantation in Scotland, of the rare spider Clubiona subsultans in the mature stage of the chronosequence. This has implications both for the UK's Biodiversity Action Plan and for the management of the pinewoods in the National Nature Reserve that was declared in Glen Affric in 2002.
