In the past 150 years, the life span of the Royal Scottish Forestry Society, forests in the USA have gone through the stages of exploitation, depletion, conservation, restoration, and multiple use management. While the government has been responsive to address this transition through formulating appropriate policies, the Society of American Foresters (SAP) that was created in 1900 out of the specter of depletion by overexploitation, wildfires and no management, has been relentlessly trying to advancethe science, education, technology, and practice of sustainable forestry. In particular, the SAF has been instrumental in enormous advancements of forest productivity and health, wildlife conservation and habitat enhancement, recreation, and professional education. More recently, urbanization and forest fragmentation, macroeconomic forces, role of forests in climate change, and market-driven certification are challenging the SAF to explore innovative mechanisms to ensure the continued stewardship of valuable forest resources not only in the USA but also the World. With its mission of advancing sustainable forestry, the SAF continues to play a critical role in resolving these contemporary forest issues. In this paper, the historical evolution of forestry in the USA is discussed as well as how forestry institutions and organizations, such as SAF, were evolved to address the challenges associated with the evolution. We present selected contemporary forestry issues that are influencing forestry and the efforts made to address these issues in the US through the active involvement and efforts of the SAF.
