摘要

By using oral history methods and talking with a variety of people connected with or observing the whole process of converting moorland to trees, it was hoped to document a 'factory-floor' picture of 20th century afforestation in Scotland. This wouldbe a valuable comparison with that given in official histories. Whitelee Forest was chosen because of local social features which made it likely that contributors would be forthcoming. People from many backgrounds provided detailed accounts of the environment, farming and resource use of the Whitelee Plateau while it was moorland and the reasons why the Forestry Commission wished to buy, and farmers wished to sell, the land. Contributors gave detailed accounts of afforestation from the moment farmers vacated their land until the last tree-was planted and, recently, made available as a wind-farm. Changes in forest-technology were discussed, while the effects of afforestation on farming, ecology, landscape, local people and economy were described in detail by contributors. It was concluded that oral history could provide verifiable data on this significant change to the Scottish landscape.
