Consortium petitions APHIS to consider economics in review of Roundup Ready wheat. If transgenic wheat were to be commercialized in the next few years, negative reaction by foreign buyers could possibly translate to significantly lower prices for hard red spring wheat and possibly durum wheat, according to a recent report by Robert Wisner, Iowa State University economist. A consortium of groups concerned about the commercialization of transgenic wheat is citing the report and is appealing to the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to consider the economic implications of transgenic wheat in its regulatory approval process. (Monsanto petitioned APHIS to deregulate glyphosate resistant wheat last December, which would remove ahurdle for commercialization of its transgenic Roundup Ready hard red spring wheat. The consortium, including the Western Organization of Resource Councils or WORC, contends that deregulation is the only barrier left to commercialization of the wheat.)
