"Golden Rice" and plans for its release to the developing world could well be an example of the Golden Rule if all goes well between private and public sector collaborators over the next few years. The rice, which has been genetically modified to contain beta-carotene and other carotenoids, may have the potential to contribute significantly to addressing the problem of Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD). VAD causes approximately 1-2 million deaths annually. Between a quarter and a half million irreversiblecases of blindness are also attributed to the disease each year. What's more, the various patent holders are clearing the way to make the rice seed available free to poor farmers in developing nations, said Vincent Volckaert, managing director for Syngenta South Africa (Pty) Ltd., to attendees of the recent FIS Congress in Sun City, South Africa.
