摘要

The FIS Working Group on Organics will meet at the FIS Congress in May in Chicago. The Working Group consists of seed industry representatives from the US, Canada and Europe involved in vegetable and ornamental, field crop and fodder seed. Accordingto Roland Peerenboom, chair of the Working Group and commercial director, Enza Zaden and Vitalis Organic Seeds, Enkhuizen, Netherlands, the group's primary objective is to compare country regulations for organic seed production and marketing to avoid non-tariff trade barriers. In Chicago., the Working Group is expected to focus on current discussions in Europe about the system of granting exemptions after January 1, 2004, and how this will be controlled. Europe has mandated that after this date organicgrowers must use organically produced seed as opposed to conventionally produced, non-treated seed. European seed companies aim to have as few exemptions as possible at species level. Only in very limited cases may organic growers be exempted from the use of organic seed, says Peerenboom.
