摘要

Conventional casting technique followed by hot extrusion can be effectively used for the synthesis of composites with different levels of interconnectivity in wire reinforcement even when the volume fraction of the reinforcement is as low as 0.049.The use of interconnected-wires as reinforcement reduced the average CTE of the aluminum alloy below the theoretical predictions. The degree of interconnectivity of the wires, however, did not affect the CTE of the aluminum alloy.The average elastic modulus was found to exceed the rule of mixture prediction in the case of aluminum alloy composite with 98 percent interconnected-wire reinforcement. Average values of 0.2 percent yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength of the composites were found to be higher than that of monolithic aluminum and independent of the variations in the interconnectivity of reinforcing wires.
