The JGOFS Open Science Conference in May 2003 took place at the National Science Foundation in Arlington,Virginia.This article is based on presentations conducted at that conference.The primary purpose of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study(JGOFS)is to reduce uncertainties in the oceans' absorption of atmospheric carbon.JGOFS has two primary goals.
