The soil and climatic conditions of the Konkan region of Maharashtra are very good for the cultivation of fruit crops particularly Mango, Cashew, Sapota, coconut etc. Condisering all the advantages of cashew cultivation, Government of Maharashtra included this crop in the Employment Guarantee Scheme linked horticulture development programme implemented since 1990. The farmer's from the Konkan region responded very well to this scheme and the area under casehw crop is increasing every year. At present in Maharashtra 1,53,000 Ha area is under this crop and Maharashtra is first in country in respect of area. The productivity in the state is also highest i.e. 1500 kg/ha, in the country.
