The development of algorithms for the retrieval of chlorophyll concentrations in the coastal zone from remote sensing spectra is frequently based on the analysis of the spectral features in the near infrared(NIR)region.This is because the alternative simple blue-green ratio approach,which is based on the reflectance ratio in blue and green bands and which is valid in the open ocean,fails when strongly scattering mineral particles and color-dissolved organic matter(CDOM)are present.However,the reflectance peak in NIR can be significantly affected by chlorophyll fluorescence and changes in backscatter-ing spectra,depending on the water composition.
