U.S. Navy forces responded to a series of attacks on cargo vessels in international waters during the first week of April, capturing, destroying and sinking several suspected pirate vessels. Operating west of the Seychelles on April 1, the USS Nicholas (FFC-47) reported taking fire at 12:27 a.m. from a suspected pirate skiff and returned fire, pursuing the disabled skiff. At about 2 a.m., Nicholas boarded the skiff and detained three people. The Navy said the boarding team found ammunition and fuel aboard. Nicholas then sank the skiff. The Navy captured two other suspected pirates from the skiff's mother ship.
