The 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons resulted in more than 30 billion in U.S.property loss and damage and nearly 2,000 direct fatalities within our coastal communities.This devastation painfully demonstrates that our national coastlines are exposed to recurring extreme weather events that can generate significant ongoing risk to lives and property.Many factors,including coastal development pressure,increased storm activity,sea-level rise,coastal subsidence and loss of wetlands are likely to exacerbate this risk in the future.
