Six years and 13.5 million in the making, the Monterey Accelerated Research System—the first deep-sea ocean observatory offshore the continental United States—went live on November 10, returning the first scientific data from 900 meters below the ocean surface. Construction of the observatory was coordinated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).
