Enhancing avian and exotic pet practice requires an inward view of practice that seeks to understand and address the expectations of clients, patients, and referring veterinarians. A survey conducted indicated that key elements in promoting specialist referral included the specialist's skills in their discipline, the owner's desire to give a loved animal optimal care, the general practitioner's recommendation or lack or experience with the species or discipline, and the availability of state-of-the-art technology at the specialist practice, Enhancing practice also calls for an outward view that considers underpinning values in a historic and global environmental perspective. Species extinctions and the global spread of avian pathogens are considered in this context.
