Before we can start talking about Sustainability or how we can obtain it, we need to cope with several respects in which that broadly stated understanding is imprecise. The first has to do with what we mean when we talk of human welfare and the kindsof resources we need to provide it. The second relates to some important issues of equity. The third involves history: should we incorporate into the concept not just a single starting point, but some consideration of past rates of change?
