Within the last decade, widespread adoption of the LEED~R (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has spurred the design and construction of buildings that are not only environmentally responsible but also healthy and profitable places to live and work. A variety of structures ranging from homes, schools, and office buildings to hotels, housing developments, and embassies have earned LEED awards. Architects, developers, and othersin the building industry increasingly seek LEED certification. Even manufacturers have come to prize having their goods and materials recognized as "green building products."
