Fossil-fuel combustion releases carbon dioxide (CO_2) to the atmosphere, leading to a warmer climate. But there is another direct impact of increasing CO_2 in the atmosphere. It is changing the chemistry of the ocean. The ocean absorbs CO_ from the atmosphere at a rate of more than 20 million tons per day, thus removing one-fourth of the anthropogenic CO_ emitted to the atmosphere each year (Canadell, 2007; GCP, 2008) and thereby reducing climate-change impacts of this "greenhouse gas." But this benefit to humanity does not come without a cost to the ocean. When CO_ dissolves in seawater, it forms carbonic acid. As this ocean acidification continues, it decreases both ocean pH and the concentration of carbonate ion, the basic building block of the shells and skeletons of many marine organisms.
