Continuous charging of an EAF via a tunnel preheater/feeder can be fitted as a retrofit in an existing meltshop or as a new installation. Overall energy is saved by a number of mechanisms; postcombustion of CO in the preheater; transfer of sensible heat from the flue gases; by the avoidance of opening the furnace roof for charging and by greater ability in controlling throughput enabling sequence matching downstream with the potential for hot charging. Dust and noise emissions are also lowered and the disturbance on the power supply greatly reduced.
