This lecture considers the key process step of debindering, presents a newly developed debindering technology for porous ceramics and explains the application of this technology for intermittent as well as for continuous production kilns. Porous ceramics are used in large quantities for numerous applications. One of the highest volume examples of this is as diesel particulate filters (DPF) in the automobile industry: The DPF is installed in the exhaust gas flow. During the filtering process the exhaust gas flows through the porous ceramic walls and the sooty particles get stuck there. With increasing sooting of the filter, the pressure drop increases. Therefore it is necessary to provide for an efficient regeneration of the filter through the effective combustion of the accumulated soot at regular intervals. During this regeneration process, the porous ceramics are exposed to a severe thermal shock. Porous ceramic honeycomb structures based on SiC, see Figure 1 and lately also of aluminium titanate (ATI), see Fissure 2 have been proven to be adequate in this connection.
