Strength is a significant property to characterise the state of development of a ceramic material. In general the measurement is made using the four point bending test following EN 843-1. Here the most serious shortcoming is the preparation of the test specimens, which makes expensive and critical grinding necessary. But during development each variant of a new material needs to be assessed by strength tests. This requires the testing of a large quantity of specimens in a short period of time. Therefore there is a strong need for a less expensive but precise strength testing method. A solution is offered by the ball on three balls test, which has recently been developed at the Montanuniversitat Leoben. In this paper the application of this test in the course of the development of a new partially stabilised zirconia is described.
