A physical model of internal-crack formation in slabs has been developed. The conditions of crack formation are established by considering the defects and the total stress acting in the slab, as well as stress relaxation. By taking account of the external and internal thermomechanical and kinetic factors responsible for crack formation, as well as the mechanisms and conditions of crack formation, and by establishing the relative importance of these factors at the various stages of continuous casting, the casting conditions for each class of steel may be optimized, so as to significantly reduce the probability of crack formation (perhaps even to zero).
