THE CALENDAR of annual meteor showers is nearly empty in the first half of the year and rich in the second, for no good reason but coincidence. The meteoroid streams that cause showers, bits of rubble shed by crumbling comets, probably disperse in a matter of many millennia. Nearly all the best streams that currently intersect Earth's orbit do so on the orbit's early-July to early-January side, but that's probably just a temporary fluke. There's nothing in the inherent arrangement of comets, planets, or gravitational perturbations that should systematically favor one side of our orbit over the other.
