I AM WRITING this on a transatlantic flight and wasjust handed a Dutch candy bar with the label "Mars: Feelthe Vibe" — appropriate for a day when my morning inboxwas inundated with messages asking if life has really beenfound on Mars. That's what I get for taking a day off! Everytime life is discovered on Mars, I seem to miss it. WhenMartians were announced in a 1996 press conference, Iwas relaxing in the mountains and was astounded to seenewspaper headlines declaring "Life on Mars." Behind thehype, there was a significant discovery — tiny, segmentedstructures in a meteorite from Mars that might be micro-fossils, though skeptics declared they were simply quirkymineral formations. This debate is still unresolved.
